The Dalhousie Gazette is an award winning student-run newspaper serving the Dalhousie University community in Halifax, Nova Scotia. As the Layout Editor, I am responsible for designing and arranging text, images, and graphics for print, using content provided by each department.

Process

The editorial team meets weekly to pitch story ideas, provide updates on reporting, and collaboratively debate the editorial article for each issue. I work closely with the Editor-in-Chief, Jenna Olsen, to ensure that visual design, content flow, and story order align with her vision for each issue. With a bi-weekly publication schedule, I produce the layout with a 2-day turnaround.

Design

As Layout Editor, I design 20 pages per issue, organizing approximately 35 stories across multiple departments. I use a flexible grid and typographic system to maintain cohesion while avoiding repetitive layouts. I make decisions about hierarchy, pacing, and story emphasis to guide readers through dense editorial content. I ensure each issue feels engaging while meeting the practical demands of a bi-weekly newspaper.
